Q: Are there income limits for the Fair Housing Enforcement Program?

A: No. The fair housing project does not have income or asset guidelines. Other assistance and programs at Legal Aid do have income and asset limits.
 
Q: Can landlords call Legal Aid for fair housing advice?
A: Landlords may call our hotline for ‘technical assistance’, which is basic information about the law. We cannot dispense advice about specific legal situations, and we cannot give legal counsel. (or… This is not/different from advice about specific legal situations or legal counsel.)
 
Q: I’m not sure if I want to pursue legal action. Should I call you anyway?
A: Yes. We offer a wide range of advocacy and legal services for clients, some of which do not include formal legal action. During our intake process, we will help you to better understand your specific situation and discuss your legal options. Even if you choose not to pursue any course of action, we still want to hear your story.
 
Q: Are you a state agency?
A: No, Legal Aid is a private non-profit organization. The Fair Housing Enforcement Program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Urban and Housing Development.
 
Q: Do you help people find housing?
A: No, we do not help people find housing. 
 
Q: Do you provide free educational training to the community?
A: Yes, if you would like to learn more about fair housing laws, contact us at: 527-8024. We can help tenants understand their civil rights in housing. We also train housing providers about their responsibilities under the law, and how to minimize their liability. Generally, training can be provided on-site for your convenience. Session length and content can be tailored to meet the particular needs of your group. There is no fee or cost for the training.
 
Q: I want to seek help for my fair housing issue. What should I do?
A: You can call our fair housing hotline at: 808-527-8024; neighbor islands: 866-527-3247. You may also visit our Honolulu office, located at: 924 Bethel Street in Honolulu, Hawaii, from 9 - 11:30am, or 1 – 3:30pm. Walk-ins are served on a first come, first serve basis.
